Use this Social Media Audit Checklist to Optimize Your Platforms in Under an Hour

Most business owners know their social media could be performing better. Fewer know exactly why it isn't or where to start fixing it.

A social media audit gives you that clarity. It's not a deep dive that takes days. Done right, it's a focused, structured review of what's working, what's holding you back, and what to prioritize next, in under an hour.

This checklist walks you through every layer of your social media presence, from your profile to your content to your engagement patterns, so you walk away with a clear picture and a concrete next step.

What Is a Social Media Audit?

A social media audit is a structured review of your social media accounts (profile, content, engagement, and strategy) to assess what's performing, what's underperforming, and what's missing entirely.

It's the difference between posting and hoping, and knowing exactly what your social media is doing for your business.

A good audit looks at:

  • How your profile appears to someone who has never heard of you

  • Whether your content is speaking to your ideal customer or just about your brand

  • Which posts are earning saves, shares, and comments and why they converted into action

  • Whether your platforms are working together as a cohesive, funneled system

How Often Should You Audit Your Social Media?

For most established businesses, a full social media audit once per quarter is the sweet spot. That's enough time for content patterns to emerge and for any changes you made after the last audit to show measurable results.

At minimum, audit once every six months. If you've recently rebranded, launched a new offer, or hired someone new to manage your accounts, audit immediately, before building more content on a foundation that may need work.

The Social Media Audit Checklist

Work through each section in order. Check off what's in good shape. Flag what needs attention. By the end, you'll have a prioritized list of fixes.

Section 1: Profile Optimization (10 minutes)

Your profile is your first impression. Someone new to your brand should be able to answer three questions within five seconds of landing on it: Who is this for? What do they get? What should I do next?

Check each of the following:

Name field: Does it include a searchable keyword your ideal customer would type? (Not just your name or brand name)

Bio: Does it speak directly to your ideal customer, not describe your business? (Lead with their reality, not your credentials)

CTA: Is there a clear, specific call to action with a link? ("Book a free call" beats "DM me")

Profile photo: Is it professional, on-brand, and recognizable at a small size?

Link in bio: Is it active? Does it send the right person to the right place?

Username: Is it consistent and searchable across all platforms?

Highlights (Instagram): Are they organized for your audience, not your archive?

Section 2: Content (15 minutes)

Pull your last 8-10 posts on your primary platform. Look for patterns, not individual post performance.

Top 3 posts by saves: What do they have in common? (Topic, format, caption style)

Top 3 posts by shares: What made people want to send these to someone else?

Top 3 posts by comments: What sparked conversation?

Lowest 3 posts by reach: What's different about these? (Time posted, format, topic, hook)

Content mix: Is your content roughly 50% value, 30% connection, 20% promotional? Or is it skewed heavily toward one type?

Format variety: Are you using a mix of carousels, Reels, static posts, and Stories — or defaulting to one format?

Opening line: Does each caption open with your customer's reality, or your brand's perspective? (The first line should stop the scroll — not start with "I" or "We")

Point of view: Does your content take a clear stance? Or is it neutral information that could belong to anyone in your industry?

Brand voice: Does this sound like you — or like a generic brand?

💡 Pro tip: Saves are the most valuable signal. A saved post means someone found it useful enough to return to. If your saves are low across the board, your content may be entertaining but not actionable.

We use Metricool to track content performance across all platforms in one dashboard, it makes this section of the audit significantly faster and gives you a cleaner picture of what's actually driving results.

Section 3: Engagement (10 minutes)

Engagement tells you whether your content is landing and whether your audience is made up of the right people.

Engagement rate: A healthy engagement rate for most platforms is 1–5%. Below 1% signals a content or audience alignment issue.

Follower growth: Is your account growing, flat, or declining? Pull a 90-day trend if available.

Audience quality: Are your followers actually your ideal customer? (Check profile bios of recent followers if you're on a smaller account)

Profile visits vs. follows: A high visit-to-follow gap means your profile isn't converting curious visitors into followers. Revisit Section 1.

Saves and shares: Are people saving and sharing your content, or just scrolling past? Saves signal value; shares signal resonance.

DMs and inquiries: Is your social media generating direct messages or inquiries from potential clients? If not, the connection between content and CTA may be breaking down.

Comments quality: Are comments meaningful ("this is exactly what I needed") or generic ("great post 🔥")? Meaningful comments signal real audience connection.

What to Do With Your Audit Results

Once you've worked through the checklist, you'll have a clear picture of what's in good shape and what needs attention. Prioritize your fixes in this order:

  1. Fix first (this week): Your profile. It's the foundation everything else is built on. If your bio isn't converting visitors to followers, no amount of great content will fix it.

  2. Fix second (this month): Your content centering. If your posts are about your brand instead of your ideal customer's reality, reframe your next 10 posts around their world: their challenges, their wins, their language.

  3. Fix third (ongoing): Your consistency and data loop. Post on a schedule, review your analytics monthly, and let your data tell you what to do more of.

Quality Check Every Post Before You Publish

Before any piece of content goes live, run it through these four questions:

  1. Does this open with my customer's reality or my brand's perspective?

  2. Would my ideal customer recognize themselves in this content?

  3. Am I using their language or mine?

  4. Is every decision in this post made with my ideal customer in mind?

If the answer to any of these is no, rewrite before publishing. This single filter will improve your content more than any posting schedule, hashtag strategy, or boosted budget.
